Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) save lives. When applied within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest along with CPR, AEDs can increase survival rates to over 50%. Illinois law encourages AED placement through requirements and legal protections.
Where AEDs Are Required
- Physical fitness facilities (gyms, health clubs) — required to have at least one AED and trained staff
- Schools — required in all school buildings (both public and private)
- State buildings — required in many state-owned facilities
Good Samaritan Protections
Illinois provides strong legal protections for AED users. Under the Good Samaritan Act, any person who in good faith renders emergency care using an AED is not liable for civil damages, unless there is willful and wanton misconduct.
AED Maintenance
Having an AED isn't enough — it needs to be maintained. Check expiration dates on pads and batteries monthly. Register your AED with your local EMS dispatch center. Keep it in a visible, accessible location.
